Dr. Cheryl Smith Cotter graduated with High Honors and received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Science at the University of Florida in 1987. She completed medical school with High Honors at the University of Florida in 1990 and remained there in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery for her residency in Otolaryngology. In 1995 she moved to Boston to complete a pediatric otolaryngology fellowship through Harvard Medical School at Children's Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts.

Following fellowship in 1996, Dr. Cotter moved to Jacksonville, Florida where she practiced pediatric otolaryngology at Nemours Children’s Clinic. She was the medical director for the Infant Hearing Screening Program at Wolfson Children’s Hospital from 1998-2000. She was also a member of the Cochlear Implant Team from 1996-1998 and the Cleft Palate Team from 1996-2000. In January 2000, Dr. Cotter transferred to the Nemours Children’s Clinic in Orlando, Florida, where she joined Dr. James Kosko. Dr. Cotter has been on staff at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children from January, 2000 to present. Dr. Cotter was a member of the Nemours Performance Improvement Committee and chaired the Orlando Committee, focusing on patient quality and safety through 2006. She is currently a member of the Central Florida Cleft Palate Team.

Dr. Cotter is a member of the American Society of Pediatric Otolaryngology. She is board-certified with the American Board of Otolaryngology and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and American Academy of Pediatrics.

Dr. Cotter's achievements include multiple research awards in otolaryngology, resident teacher of the year, and guest lectures. She has taught courses on obstructive sleep apnea, visual diagnosis, and airway conditions in pediatric otolaryngology. Her research has been presented at numerous national academic meetings and she has written book chapters as well as multiple peer-reviewed articles relating to her areas of expertise. Dr. Cotter has served as Vice-Chairman of the Department of Children's Surgery at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children. Dr. Cotter's most memorable achievement is becoming a mother. Dr. Cotter and her husband Anthony have 3 children.
